Wine is great, until it ends up in your carpet or on your favorite dress. Red wine is famous for leaving stains that are hard to get out. It stains your clothing, it stains your carpets and sometimes it even stains other surfaces.

You spill a bottle, knock over a glass or get bumped into at a dinner party or casual gathering and before you know it, your red wine is all over you – or the carpet… or the couch… or someplace else it doesn’t belong.

Does this mean you have to give up your beloved wine to keep from worrying about accidents and stains? Not at all. There are some things you can do to prevent stains and then some things you can try to remove them when they do happen.

How To Remove The Stain

What do you do if you have a wine stain? What is the first step you can take? Well, don’t despair because there are ways you can remove it.

• Place stained part of the garment over an empty bowl and pour boiling water over stained area.
• Let the boiling water filter through into the bowl and the stain will disappear.
• This is a great technique for sensitive fabrics because you never have to use any harsh chemicals on it.

Commercial Wine Stain Removers

If you are looking to get rid of wine stains, you might try purchasing one of the many commercial wine stain removers on the market. There are many brands and options out there and most work well for removing wine stains and are pretty inexpensive. Keep them handy all the time if you tend to have wine regularly in your home.

But if you have a spill and don’t happen to have any, there are other options as well.;

Prevention and Protection

Commercial formulations like Scotchgard work well on carpets, couch and chairs to help prevent stains from wine, especially if you frequently entertain in your home. You may need to apply Scotchgard every six months or so for it to be fully effective. The wines or grape juice stain will be repelled like oil and water. This is an excellent way to protect your furnishings from wine stains for many years to come. You will feel more at ease and so will your guests.

Home Remedies For Removing Wine Stains

Most everyone has had a friend or someone tell them about a great wine stain removal method. But how do you know what to do when it happens to you?

Talcum Powder

Pour talcum powder on the stain. Let it dry and shake it off. The wine stain is gone!

Stain Sticks

If you have a stain remover stick in your purse, you can quickly remove a small wine stain or drip that might have dribbled onto your blouse during a dinner. Know one will ever know it had been there!

Salt

Another idea is to put cold water on the stain as soon as possible. Then sprinkle some salt over it. Allow to sit for a few minutes. Rinse the salt. Repeat again and again until the stain is gone.

Boiling Water

When you first spill the wine, the liquid hasn’t set into the fabric yet. If it’s clothing, then stretch it out over a pan and then pour boiling water through it. The stain should wash right out. If it’s something like a carpet, you can’t pour water through it but you can still treat it with boiling water. Put the water on a washcloth (preferably a clean white one with no dyes) and blot the stain until it comes up. Be sure to rinse the cloth often.

White Wine

That’s right; take out your wine stain with – more WINE! White wine can actually be helpful to help you get rid of red wine stains, even if they have dried and set into the fabric.

Baking Soda

Create a baking soda paste. The baking soda will help soak up the color of the wine stain if you mix it with a bit of water to create a paste and let it sit and soak.

Detergent and Hot Water

Use hot water and a bit of dishwashing detergent. Blot carefully at the stain. Don’t rub it in- it will only set the stain more or move it around and make it bigger. Blot gently at the stain and pull the red up from the fabric, washing the cloth often to keep it clean.

Another good idea for wine stain situations is prevention. Whenever you are actually able to prevent the stain to begin with, you have less to stress over.
